ماذا يمكنني، كأوروبي، أن أتعلمه من الحياة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة؟
مرتين في السنة أقضي إجازتي في دبي وإمارات أخرى، وليس ذلك فقط بسبب الطقس المشمس والشواطئ الجميلة..
ما يدهشني في كل مرة هو كيف يستطيع مجتمع يضم هذا العدد الكبير من الجنسيات أن يعيش جنبًا إلى جنب بسلام وأمان، خصوصًا في دبي، حيث لا يشكّل المواطنون الإماراتيون سوى نحو ١٠٪ من عدد السكان، بينما الغالبية من الوافدين، خاصة من الهند وباكستان وبنغلاديش والفلبين وإيران ، هندوس ومسيحيون ومسلمون… ومع ذلك يبدو أن الجميع يعيش في قدر كبير من الانسجام.
قد يشير البعض إلى بساطة ظروف العمل للآلاف من هؤلاء العمال المجتهدين، وهذه زاوية واحدة للنظر إلى الموضوع، لكن إذا أخذنا في الاعتبار أن كثيرين منهم هربوا من أوضاع قاسية في بلدانهم الأصلية، فربما يرون في العمل في الإمارات فرصة وحياة أفضل رغم التحديات.
الأمان عامل آخر يثير إعجابي هنا، فالقوانين الصارمة وأنظمة المراقبة قد تعطي انطباعًا سلبيًا للبعض، لكن في دبي تستطيع المرأة أن تسير في الشارع ليلًا بمفردها دون خوف، وهو أمر لا يُنصح به في معظم المدن الأوروبية.
والكحول عامل مهم في إثارة المشكلات والسلوك العنيف، ورغم أنه متوفر هنا، خاصة في الفنادق، إلا أن: الغالبية العظمى من المسلمين لا يشربون الكحول أصلًا ، ولا يمكن شراؤه بسهولة من كل زاوية كما هو الحال في أوروبا، وهذا بحد ذاته يحدّ من كثير من المشكلات ويساهم في تعزيز الأمن في البلاد.
وأخيرًا، لا بد أن أذكر كثرة الأنشطة والمعالم التي توفرها الإمارات لسكانها، وغالبًا مجانًا أو بأسعار معقولة، من النزهات العائلية في «القرية العالمية» و«حديقة الزهور» في دبي، إلى متحف اللوفر ومسجد الشيخ زايد الكبير في أبوظبي، على سبيل المثال لا الحصر، فالعيش في مدينة كبرى مثل دبي قد يكون مرهقًا أحيانًا، لكن أين يمكن للمرء أن يتجول بجوار أطول مبنى في العالم ويشاهد عروض نوافير مدهشة مجانًا؟

What can I, as a European, learn from life in the United Arab Emirates?
Twice a year I spend my vacation in Dubai and other Emirates – and this not only because of sunny weather and beautiful beaches.
What amazes me each time is to see how a society of so many nationalities manages to live side by side in peace and safety. Especially in Dubai where local Emiraties constitute only 10 % of the population, the rest are all expats, primarily from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Phillipines and Iran, – Hindus, Christians, Moslems – all seem to live in relative harmony.
Pointing the finger on often very simple working conditions for the thousands of these hardworking laborers is one way of looking at it. When you consider, that many of them just escaped a miserable reality in their home country maybe they see an advantages after all by making a living in the Emirates.
Safety is another aspect that I admire here. Tough laws, surveillance systems etc. may have a negative taste, but in Dubai even a woman can walk the streets at night on her own … not advisable in most of the European cities.
Alcohol is a factor for trouble and violent behavior. While I know that it is also available here – in hotels anyway – the fact that
a) the vast majority of moslems do not drink alcohol at all and
b) you just can’t buy it readily at each corner (like in Europe)
prevents a lot of problems and contributes to the safety of the country.
Last but not least, I must mention the numerous attractions the UAE offers for its residents, often free or at moderate prices. From family outings to Global Village or Magical Gardens in Dubai to the Louvre Museum and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, just to mention a few.
Living in a metropolis like Dubai may be tiring, but where else can you stroll around the largest building of the world and watch beautiful fountain shows for free?
